About the Project
Relations between the U.S. and Cuba had never been harmonious. And set against the backdrop of the longstanding embargo and economic sanctions, 90 American, European and Cuban artists came together for this historic event in Havana. This watershed moment in Cuba-US relations was organized in partnership with Cuba’s Instituto Cubano de la Musica and Ministerio de Cultura, as well as under license from the US Treasury Department.
Over 60 songs were written and recorded over a 5-day span. A final concert performance at the Karl Marx Theatre was followed by a private reception with Fidel Castro.
The event generated a tremendous amount of global media attention, showing what’s possible when cultures in political conflict, come together for the sake of creating great music.
"All of us felt like we were part of something special. I left Cuba full of hope — not just about US-Cuban relations, but about the ability of people to move beyond politics and nationalism, to forge a relationship that is uniquely ‘of the people’ " - Woody Harrelson
