Bio: Alan Roy Scott

Alan Roy Scott

Noted songwriter and musical ambassador Alan Roy Scott has utilized the power of music to bridge cultures through songwriting, collaboration and performance. Scott is the creator and founder of Music Bridges, the bold experiment that has bridged cultural divides through the universal language of music. Having moved mountains and made music history from the former Soviet Union to Cuba, Scott is now embarking on his most ambitious musical gatherings to date, including a Music Bridges event in the Middle East.

Scott’s dedication has made it possible for Music Bridges to achieve historic success bringing well-known music artists to very sensitive regions around the world to write new songs for a week with their cultural counterparts, bridging political and cultural gaps with artists and writers such as Bonnie Raitt, Burt Bacharach, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Bolton, Diane Warren, Gladys Knight, R.E.M., Jimmy Buffett, Mick Fleetwood, Don Was, Dave Koz, Desmond Child, Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, Lamont Dozier, Michael Franti, and Beth Nielsen Chapman among others.

Inspired by his father’s political activism during the civil rights movement, Scott acquired a love for music and understanding of social justice at an early age. As a child, Scott witnessed his father’s political passion and fondly remembers the Pontiac dealership his father owned that became an oasis between the African American and white communities. Scott’s father was at the forefront of the Civil Rights movement in Chicago; his father was a member of the NAACP, President of the Chicago Urban League and was a co-creator and sponsor of legendary local TV gospel music program “Jubilee Showcase” that sparked Scott’s musical passion. During the peak of the Civil Rights movement, Scott’s father became a trusted bridge to connect the African American and white communities, which inspired Scott to use his musical talents to similarly bridge people through music.

His own travels around the world as composer and artist representing the USA in international music festivals, took him to in such diverse settings as Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Indonesia, Egypt, Japan, Poland, Holland Finland, Chile, & Czechoslovakia. In this setting of new friendships and camaraderie among artists from nations often in conflict with each other, came the genesis of the idea of bridging his own childhood memories with the new global and creative insights he gained in his travels to create the unique forum that is Music Bridges.

Scott has enjoyed over 20 years of successfully writing songs for major artists, film and TV shows, and related media. His songs have been recorded by an array of well-known artists including: Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan, Notorious B.I.G., Cher, Luther Vandross, Celine Dion, Ray Charles, Rick Springfield, Pat Benetar, Patti LaBelle and The Neville Bros. among many. Scott’s songs have also appeared in blockbuster films including “Top Gun,” “Coming to America,” and “The First Wives Club,” and heard on popular TV shows such as “Fame,” “Santa Barbara,” and “As The World Turns.”

Alan Roy Scott has chosen to dedicate his professional career to pursuing Music Bridges full time, merging his musical background with his political upbringing, on a focused path towards bridging more political and cultural boundaries through music around the world. And so the journey continues.......
